Gentle frame removal

5

Remove frames by first loosening them sideways with a hive tool, then sliding the frame horizontally toward an open space before lifting vertically. Always remove an outer frame first to create clearance, making it easier to slide and lift the remaining frames without rolling bees or cracking comb.

Why It Works

Propolis bonds frames on their sides and bottom. Sliding a frame sideways shears the propolis at its weakest point, requiring far less force than pulling straight up. The lateral motion also avoids crushing bees caught between adjacent frames. Creating an open slot by removing an edge frame first eliminates frame-to-frame friction entirely.

Tips

  • Start with frame 2 or 9 (near the wall) rather than the center, where brood comb is heaviest and most fragile
  • Lift slowly and steadily once the frame is free to avoid jarring bees off the comb
  • In hot weather, fresh comb is soft -- extra care with lateral movement prevents comb blowouts
  • Practice on honey supers before working brood frames to build confidence
