Supplement feed and reduce colony stress

2

Provide supplemental sugar syrup (1:1 ratio in spring, 2:1 in autumn) and pollen substitute to strengthen a colony fighting sacbrood. SBV infections are strongly correlated with nutritional stress, so restoring adequate food stores is often enough for colonies to suppress the virus naturally.

Why It Works

Well-nourished bees mount a stronger immune response and are more effective at hygienic behavior -- detecting and removing infected larvae before the virus can spread. Protein from pollen is especially critical, as nurse bees need it to produce brood food and maintain healthy larval development.

Tips

  • Feed 1:1 sugar syrup in spring to stimulate brood rearing; switch to 2:1 in autumn for winter stores
  • Offer pollen patties or pollen substitute if natural pollen sources are scarce
  • Reduce unnecessary hive inspections to minimize disturbance during recovery
  • Provide windbreaks for exposed apiaries and shade during extreme heat
  • Ensure adequate ventilation to prevent moisture buildup, which compounds stress
