Use queen catchers and marking tubes for safe handling

4

Queen catchers and marking tubes hold the queen safely during marking and clipping, reducing the risk of injury. A queen catcher (clip-style cage) lets you pick her up directly off the comb without touching her. A marking tube is a clear cylinder with a foam plunger that gently presses the queen against a mesh end, exposing her thorax for marking.

Choosing the Right Tool

  • Clip catcher -- Spring-loaded plastic cage; fastest way to catch a queen off the frame. Best for quick captures during inspections.
  • Marking tube -- Clear tube with plunger; holds the queen still for precise paint application. Essential for beginners who find hand-holding difficult.
  • Hair roller cage -- Wire mesh cylinder placed over the queen on the comb; confines her without picking her up. Good for letting her calm down before handling.

Tips

  • Always handle the queen over the open hive so she falls back in if dropped
  • Move slowly and deliberately -- sudden movements alarm both queen and workers
  • Warm hands are less likely to chill the queen than cold ones
  • Practice catching and releasing drones before working with the queen
