Keep a dedicated beekeeping journal

4

Use a physical notebook or purpose-made beekeeping journal to log each hive inspection by hand. Record the date, hive number, queen status, brood pattern, temperament, pest signs, treatments applied, and honey super status on every visit.

Why It Works

Handwritten logs are always available at the apiary with no battery or signal needed. Pre-formatted beekeeping journals (such as those from Bee & Bloom or Echo Point) include prompts for queen spotted, eggs present, disease signs, and harvest weight, so you never forget a data point. A simple composition notebook works just as well with your own column layout.

Tips

  • Number your hives and use the same ID in every entry so you can trace a colony's history across seasons
  • Pencil holds up better than ink in humid or rainy apiary conditions
  • Review notes at the end of each month to catch patterns like declining brood or recurring mite counts
