Track hive data with a spreadsheet
3
Create a spreadsheet in Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, or Excel with columns for date, hive ID, queen status, brood frames, honey supers, mite count, treatments, and notes. Enter data after each inspection to build a searchable, sortable digital record of your entire apiary.
Why It Works
Spreadsheets let you filter by hive, sort by date, and chart trends like honey yield per colony or mite wash counts over time. Conditional formatting can flag high mite loads (above 3 per 100 bees) or missing inspections. Google Sheets is free, syncs across devices, and can be shared with a beekeeping mentor or partner.
Tips
- Start with a simple template: one row per hive per inspection date, with consistent column headers
- Use a dropdown list for common entries (queen seen, eggs, larvae, capped brood) to speed data entry and keep terms consistent
- Back up your file at least monthly to a second location like a USB drive or cloud folder
