Proper smoker use
4
Light your smoker with natural fuel and apply cool, dense white smoke at the hive entrance and under the lid before opening. Use brief, gentle puffs during the inspection whenever bees become agitated. Smoke disrupts the alarm pheromone isopentyl acetate, preventing a defensive cascade, and triggers a feeding response that occupies workers.
Why It Works
When bees detect smoke, they gorge on honey in preparation for a possible hive evacuation. Engorged bees are physiologically less able to sting and chemically less alert to alarm signals. This dual effect, blocking pheromone communication and redirecting behavior, gives the beekeeper a calmer colony to work with.
Tips
- Use natural fuels such as pine needles, burlap, or dried hardwood shavings; avoid synthetic materials that produce toxic fumes.
- Aim for cool white smoke. If the smoke is hot or thin and blue, add more fuel or re-light.
- Apply two to three puffs at the entrance, wait 30 seconds, then open the hive.
- Avoid over-smoking, which can agitate bees and taint honey with a smoky flavor.
