Water source for evaporative cooling
3
Place a shallow water station within 5-15 meters of the apiary so forager bees can quickly collect water and return it to the hive for evaporative cooling. Use a dish or tray filled with pebbles, marbles, or cork floats to give bees a safe landing surface.
Why It Works
When hive temperature exceeds roughly 35°C (95°F), water-collector bees bring droplets inside and spread them on comb surfaces. Other bees fan their wings to evaporate the water, which absorbs heat and lowers internal temperature by several degrees -- the same principle as a swamp cooler.
Tips
- Refill the water source daily in hot weather; a colony can consume over a liter per day
- Add a pinch of salt occasionally, as bees prefer slightly mineral-rich water
- Position the water in partial shade to keep it cool and reduce evaporation loss
- Establish the water source early in spring so bees imprint on it before seeking out neighbors' pools
