Provide proper nutrition and clean water
4
Feed species-appropriate commercial feed formulated for your animals' life stage and purpose, and provide constant access to clean, fresh water. Chickens need layer feed (16% protein) for egg production, goats need hay plus a grain supplement, and rabbits need unlimited timothy hay with measured pellets.
Why It Works
Well-nourished animals have stronger immune systems and resist disease far better than malnourished ones. Nutritional deficiencies cause specific health problems — calcium deficiency in laying hens causes soft-shelled eggs and egg binding, while copper deficiency in goats leads to coat and fertility problems. Contaminated water transmits bacterial and parasitic diseases.
Tips
- Clean and refill waterers daily — standing water grows algae and bacteria rapidly
- Store feed in sealed metal containers to prevent rodent contamination and mold
- Avoid feeding moldy hay or feed, which can cause aspergillosis (a fatal fungal infection)
