Prune Overhanging Tree Branches

3

Selectively remove lower limbs or thin the canopy of nearby trees that cast excessive shade onto your garden. Focus on branches blocking morning and midday sun, which are most valuable for plant growth. Use proper pruning cuts just outside the branch collar to protect tree health and prevent disease entry.

Why It Works

Trees are often the single largest source of shade in residential gardens. Removing even a few strategic branches can dramatically increase the hours of direct sunlight reaching the ground below. Thinning the canopy also allows dappled light through, which many plants can use effectively.

Tips

  • Handle small branches (under 3 inches diameter) yourself with a pruning saw and loppers
  • Hire a certified arborist for large limbs or high canopy work to avoid injury and tree damage
  • Prune during the tree's dormant season when possible to reduce stress
  • Check local ordinances -- some trees may be protected and require permits before pruning
