Install Reflective Surfaces Near the Garden
2
Place light-colored or reflective materials -- such as white-painted walls, fences, or purpose-built reflective panels -- adjacent to your garden beds. These surfaces bounce available sunlight back toward plants, increasing the total light they receive even when direct exposure is limited.
Why It Works
Reflective surfaces redirect photons that would otherwise be absorbed by dark walls, fences, or bare ground. While the effect is supplementary rather than transformative, it can meaningfully boost light levels in partially shaded spots, often adding the equivalent of 1-2 extra hours of indirect light depending on surface area and placement.
Tips
- White-painted plywood or aluminum foil on boards are cheap, effective reflectors
- Position reflective surfaces on the shaded side of beds so they bounce light onto plants
- Avoid concentrating reflected light into a narrow spot, which can overheat foliage
- Combine this technique with other solutions like pruning for a cumulative effect
