Ranger Roll (Military Roll) for Compactness
The Ranger Roll is a military-derived folding technique that creates extremely tight, self-securing bundles. It is ideal for travel or limited storage where compactness matters more than avoiding wrinkles.
How It Works
Using a T-shirt as an example: lay the shirt face-down and fold the bottom hem upward about three to four inches to form an inside cuff. Fold the left third of the shirt toward the center, folding the sleeve back onto itself. Repeat with the right third, forming a narrow rectangle over the cuff. Starting from the neckline, roll the shirt down very tightly toward the bottom. Once fully rolled, fold the cuff back over the entire roll to lock it in place, similar to a sleeping bag.
Best For
Suitcases, backpacks, and military-style packing where maximum compression is the priority. Each roll stays secured without ties or bands. Apply the same technique to pants, shorts, and lightweight jackets.
