Use a plunger
4
A fast, no-cost method that uses pressure and suction to dislodge soft blockages in sinks, tubs, and showers. Often the best first step before trying other methods.
Steps
- Use a flat-bottomed cup plunger (not a flange/toilet plunger).
- Fill the basin with enough water to submerge the plunger cup.
- If working on a double sink, block the second drain with a wet cloth.
- Place the plunger squarely over the drain and pump vigorously 15-20 times.
- Pull the plunger away sharply and check if the water drains.
- Repeat 2-3 times if needed.
Tips
- A good seal is critical — coat the plunger rim with petroleum jelly if it keeps slipping.
- Works best on soft blockages like food or soap buildup. Hair clogs usually need a drain snake.
- For bathtubs, plug the overflow opening with a wet cloth to maintain suction.
