Use a drain snake or auger
5
The most effective DIY method for physically removing clogs caused by hair, soap scum, or food debris. Works on sinks, showers, and tub drains.
Steps
- Remove the drain cover or stopper.
- Insert the snake tip into the drain and slowly feed it in while turning the handle clockwise.
- When you feel resistance, keep rotating and push gently to hook or break through the blockage.
- Carefully pull the snake back out, bringing debris with it.
- Flush the drain with hot water to clear remaining residue.
Tips
- A basic 25-foot manual snake handles most household clogs and costs under $30.
- Wear gloves — retrieved debris can be unpleasant.
- If the snake meets a hard stop that will not budge, the obstruction may be deeper in the main line and could require professional help.
- For bathroom sinks, try removing the P-trap first — many clogs sit right there and can be cleared by hand.
