Use a drain snake or auger

5

The most effective DIY method for physically removing clogs caused by hair, soap scum, or food debris. Works on sinks, showers, and tub drains.

Steps

  1. Remove the drain cover or stopper.
  2. Insert the snake tip into the drain and slowly feed it in while turning the handle clockwise.
  3. When you feel resistance, keep rotating and push gently to hook or break through the blockage.
  4. Carefully pull the snake back out, bringing debris with it.
  5. Flush the drain with hot water to clear remaining residue.

Tips

  • A basic 25-foot manual snake handles most household clogs and costs under $30.
  • Wear gloves — retrieved debris can be unpleasant.
  • If the snake meets a hard stop that will not budge, the obstruction may be deeper in the main line and could require professional help.
  • For bathroom sinks, try removing the P-trap first — many clogs sit right there and can be cleared by hand.
