Baking soda & vinegar flush

3

A simple pantry-staple method that helps loosen light drain buildup and deodorize pipes. Best suited for slow-running drains rather than full blockages.

Steps

  1. Pour a full kettle of boiling water down the drain.
  2. Add 1/2 cup baking soda and let it sit for a few minutes.
  3. Pour in 1/2 cup white vinegar, then cover the drain opening.
  4. Wait 10-15 minutes while the mixture fizzes.
  5. Flush with another kettle of boiling water.

Tips

  • The fizzing reaction produces CO2 gas, which looks dramatic but has limited mechanical force — it will not clear hair clogs or hardened buildup.
  • Most of the benefit comes from baking soda acting as a mild abrasive and deodorizer.
  • For stubborn or complete clogs, follow up with a plunger or drain snake.
  • Avoid boiling water on PVC pipes — use hot tap water instead to prevent joint damage.
