How can I stop wooden floorboards from creaking?
Creaking floorboards are caused by boards rubbing against each other or against nails and subfloor joists as they shift underfoot. The right fix depends on whether you have access to the underside of the floor.
Common Causes
Seasonal humidity changes cause wood to expand and contract, loosening the original nails or creating small gaps between boards and joists. Foot traffic then lets the boards flex, and the resulting friction or movement against fasteners produces the familiar squeak.
Choosing a Fix
If the creak is mild and between boards, a dry lubricant worked into the seams may be enough. When you can reach the floor from a basement or crawl space, securing the subfloor to the joists from below is the most effective and invisible repair. If access from below is not possible, fastening the boards from above with trim screws or finishing nails is a reliable alternative.
- Secure Boards from Below (If Accessible)4
The most effective long-term fix when you can reach the underside of the floor through a basement or crawl space. Tightening the connection between subfloor and joists eliminates movement without leaving any marks on the floor surface.

🛠️ Construction adhesive, caulk gun, short wood screws, drill/driver, safety glasses
- Apply Lubricating Powder3
A quick, non-invasive fix that reduces friction between boards by filling the gaps with a dry lubricant. Best for mild creaks where boards rub against each other rather than against joists.

🛠️ Talcum powder, graphite powder, or powdered soapstone, soft brush or cloth
- Use Trim Screws or Counter-Sunk Nails from Above3
A reliable repair when there is no access from below. Fastening the floorboard directly into the joist from above stops movement at the source. The small holes left behind are filled and become nearly invisible.
