Apply Lubricating Powder

3

A quick, non-invasive fix that reduces friction between boards by filling the gaps with a dry lubricant. Best for mild creaks where boards rub against each other rather than against joists.

Steps

  1. Walk the floor to identify which boards creak and mark them lightly with tape.
  2. Sprinkle talcum powder, graphite powder, or powdered soapstone generously into the seams around the noisy boards.
  3. Use a soft brush or cloth to work the powder down into the cracks.
  4. Step on the boards repeatedly to help the powder settle deeper into the joints.
  5. Sweep or vacuum any excess powder from the surface.

Tips

Graphite powder lasts longer than talcum but can darken light-colored floors, so test in a hidden spot first. This fix may need reapplication after several months as the powder gradually works its way out.
