Use Surface Deterrents and Provide Alternatives
3
Description
Make the furniture surfaces unpleasant for the pet while offering a comfortable, designated spot for them.
Recipe/Instructions
- Deterrents: Temporarily cover furniture surfaces with materials pets dislike: aluminum foil (crinkly sound/texture), double-sided sticky tape (sticky paws), or plastic carpet runners placed upside down (nubby texture). Commercial pet-repellent sprays (citrus or bitter scents) can also be used (test on fabric first).
- Alternative: Provide an attractive and comfortable pet bed or designated blanket in the same room. Encourage its use with praise, treats, or familiar scents.
- Consistency: If you catch your pet on the furniture, calmly redirect them to their designated spot immediately. Reward them when they use their own bed.
What makes the Dish Special
N/A - Focuses on making the desired behavior (using their own bed) more rewarding than the undesired one (using the furniture) through environmental changes and positive reinforcement.
