Sweep, vacuum, and collect slivers with bread or tape
5
Combine multiple techniques to safely remove both large shards and tiny, invisible slivers. Wear thick gloves and sturdy shoes before touching anything.
Steps
- Pick up large shards: Carefully place them onto layers of newspaper or into a sturdy cardboard box.
- Collect small slivers: Press a slice of soft bread, a folded damp paper towel, or wide duct tape (sticky side down) over the break area. Tiny fragments cling to these materials.
- Sweep thoroughly: Use a broom and dustpan, working from the outer edges of the spill toward the center.
- Vacuum the area: Go over the entire zone including crevices and surrounding spots. Empty the vacuum bag or canister into the disposal container immediately.
- Seal and label: Place all glass in a thick bag or box, label it "Broken Glass," and dispose according to local regulations.
Tips
- Soft white bread works better than dense or toasted bread because fragments embed more easily
- Shine a flashlight at floor level to spot remaining slivers that catch the light
- Keep children and pets away from the area until vacuuming is complete
