Press soft putty or Play-Doh over fragments to collect them

3

Soft, pliable putty picks up very small glass fragments from surfaces where tape or a broom may miss, including textured floors and low-pile carpet. Always wear thick gloves and sturdy shoes first.

Steps

  1. Remove large shards by hand: Carefully pick up visible pieces and place them in a sturdy disposal container.
  2. Roll putty over the area: Take a ball of Play-Doh, modeling clay, or similar soft putty and press it firmly across the break zone, reshaping it frequently to expose a clean surface.
  3. Inspect and repeat: Tiny shards embed in the putty on contact. Continue pressing until no more fragments appear.
  4. Dispose of the putty: Place the used putty in the container with the large shards. Do not reuse it.
  5. Follow up with a vacuum: Run a vacuum over the area to catch any remaining particles.

Tips

  • Putty works especially well on uneven surfaces like grout lines and textured tile where tape loses contact
  • Standard Play-Doh is effective and inexpensive; modeling clay that stays soft works equally well
  • Avoid pressing too hard on carpet to prevent pushing fragments deeper into fibers
