Soak shirts in an oxygen bleach solution overnight
4
Dissolve a scoop of powdered oxygen bleach (such as OxiClean or store-brand equivalent) in a basin of warm water and submerge the stained shirt for 4-8 hours or overnight, then launder as usual.
Why It Works
Oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate) releases hydrogen peroxide when dissolved in water. This oxidizes the organic compounds in sweat stains — proteins, oils, and aluminum-salt residue from deodorants — breaking them down so they rinse away. Unlike chlorine bleach, oxygen bleach is color-safe for most fabrics and does not weaken fibers with regular use.
Tips
- Use warm or hot water (at least 40°C / 104°F) to activate oxygen bleach fully; it is far less effective in cold water
- For heavily set stains, soak overnight and repeat if needed before drying
- Always check the care label — delicate fabrics like silk and wool should not be soaked
- A monthly preventive soak keeps white shirts bright even before visible yellowing appears
