Soak labels in warm soapy water or vinegar on glass and metal surfaces

3

Submerge the item or hold a wet cloth over the label for 15-30 minutes to loosen paper-backed labels and water-soluble adhesives. This works best on non-porous surfaces like glass, ceramic, and stainless steel where water will not cause damage.

Steps

  1. Soak the label: Submerge the item in warm water with a few drops of dish soap, or saturate a cloth with warm water or white vinegar and lay it over the sticker.
  2. Wait 15-30 minutes: Let the moisture fully penetrate and soften the paper and adhesive.
  3. Peel or scrape: Slide the label off with your fingers or a plastic scraper. It should release easily.
  4. Remove leftover residue: Rub any remaining stickiness with a cloth dampened in vinegar or a small amount of cooking oil.

Tips

  • Adding 1-2 tbsp white vinegar to the soak water speeds up adhesive breakdown
  • This method is ineffective on vinyl or plastic-coated labels since water cannot penetrate them
  • Do not soak wooden items, as prolonged moisture causes swelling and warping
