Rub banana peel, oil, or petroleum jelly onto leather for a quick shine

3

Apply a thin layer of banana peel, olive oil, or petroleum jelly to clean leather shoes, then buff to a shine. These household items contain natural oils or waxes that temporarily condition the leather surface and fill micro-scratches, creating a visible gloss within minutes.

Why It Works

Banana peels contain potassium and natural waxes that leave a thin, buffable film on leather. Olive oil and petroleum jelly work similarly by filling the pores and surface texture of the leather, reflecting light more evenly. A pea-sized amount of petroleum jelly can shine one shoe; excess oil will attract dust.

Tips

  • Always wipe shoes clean with a damp cloth first so you're polishing leather, not sealing in dirt
  • Use very small amounts of oil — a few drops on a cloth is enough for one shoe; too much leaves a greasy residue
  • Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) gives the longest-lasting shine of the three options, typically 1-2 days
  • Banana peel works in a pinch but the shine fades within hours
  • Avoid using oil on suede or fabric shoes — it will stain permanently
