Use gentle vibration to loosen the knot

3

Place the knotted section of the necklace on a hard, smooth surface and apply gentle vibration to encourage the links to shift apart on their own. This works best on loose or minor tangles rather than tight knots.

Steps

  1. Lay the necklace flat on a small hard surface like a ceramic plate or plastic lid.
  2. Place the plate on top of a running washing machine or dryer, or hold an electric toothbrush against the underside of the plate.
  3. Let the vibration work for 2-5 minutes, checking periodically for loosening.
  4. Once the knot loosens, finish untangling by hand or with fine pins.

Tips

  • Unclasp the necklace first so the freed links can slide through
  • Combine with a light dusting of baby powder for better results on stubborn tangles
  • This method is least effective on tight, multi-loop knots -- use the powder-and-pin method instead for those
