Apply a drop of oil to lubricate the knot

4

Place a tiny drop of baby oil or olive oil on the knot with a cotton swab, let it soak in for a minute or two, then use fine pins to work the lubricated links apart.

Steps

  1. Lay the necklace flat and unclasp it if possible.
  2. Dip a cotton swab in baby oil or olive oil and dab a small amount directly onto the knot.
  3. Let the oil penetrate for 1-2 minutes so it works between the links.
  4. Insert two fine needles or pins into the knot and gently tease the links apart.
  5. Once untangled, clean the necklace with mild dish soap and warm water to remove oil residue, then pat dry.

Tips

  • Use the smallest amount of oil possible -- too much makes the chain slippery and hard to grip
  • Avoid oil on porous stones like pearls, turquoise, or opals, as it can cause discoloration
  • Baby oil works slightly better than olive oil because it is thinner and penetrates faster
