Use humidifiers and apply thicker moisturizers

5

Run a humidifier in bedrooms and living areas to keep indoor humidity at 30-50%, and switch from lightweight lotions to heavier creams or ointments containing ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, shea butter, or petrolatum.

Why It Works

Dry indoor heating strips moisture from the air, which accelerates water loss from the skin's outer layer. A humidifier replenishes ambient moisture, while occlusive and humectant ingredients in thicker moisturizers trap water in the skin barrier.

Tips

  • Apply moisturizer immediately after showering while skin is still slightly damp to lock in maximum hydration
  • Reapply to hands and other exposed areas throughout the day, especially after washing
  • Look for products labeled "cream" or "ointment" rather than "lotion" for heavier coverage
