Master prep, technique, and aftercare for irritation-free shaving
5
A consistent routine covering preparation, blade technique, and skin recovery prevents most razor burn and ingrown hairs. Each stage matters equally.
Steps
- Soften hair and skin: Shave during or right after a warm shower. The heat opens follicles and softens hair. Alternatively, hold a warm damp towel on the area for 2-3 minutes.
- Exfoliate between shaves: Gently exfoliate 1-2 times per week to clear dead skin that traps hairs. Avoid exfoliating immediately before shaving.
- Apply lubrication: Use a quality shaving cream, gel, or oil. Apply generously and let it sit for a minute before the first stroke.
- Use a sharp blade: Replace cartridges or disposable razors every 5-7 shaves, or sooner if the blade drags. Dull blades cause friction and irritation.
- Shave with the grain: Follow the direction of hair growth, especially on sensitive areas. Use light strokes and rinse the blade after every pass.
- Cool and soothe: Rinse with cool water, pat dry gently, and apply an alcohol-free aftershave balm, moisturizer, or pure aloe vera gel.
Tips
- Never shave over the same spot more than twice in one session
- Stretching the skin taut gives a smoother pass on curved areas like the neck or jawline
- If irritation persists, extend the time between shaves to let skin fully recover
