Quick wipe and re-lube after every ride
4
A fast maintenance routine that keeps the chain running smoothly between full degreasing sessions. In dry conditions, this takes under two minutes and prevents grit from grinding into the rollers.
Steps
- Hold a clean rag firmly around the chain and backpedal 10-15 rotations to remove surface dust and old lube.
- Apply one small drop of chain lube to each roller while slowly backpedaling.
- Wait 1-2 minutes, then wipe the outside of the chain with a clean section of the rag to remove excess.
Why It Works
Dirt accumulates on the chain's outer plates and mixes with lube to form an abrasive paste. Wiping it away before re-lubing ensures fresh lube reaches the rollers without trapping grit inside. Done consistently, this routine can double the interval between full degreasing sessions.
Tips
- Perform after every ride in dusty or sandy conditions, or every 2-3 rides in clean conditions
- Keep a dedicated "chain rag" in your gear bag so you always have one ready
- If the chain still feels gritty after wiping, it is time for a full degrease
