Use a paint shield or broad knife as a movable mask
3
A paint shield is a wide, flat metal or plastic blade (10-14 inches) that you hold against the surface you want to protect while painting up to its edge. It works on any surface profile, including textured walls and crown molding.
Steps
- Position the shield: Press it firmly against the surface to protect (ceiling, trim, baseboard, or glass) leaving no gap.
- Paint to the edge: Brush or roll paint up to and slightly onto the shield.
- Wipe clean: Wipe both sides of the shield with a damp rag before repositioning.
- Overlap positions: Move the shield along the edge, slightly overlapping previous sections.
Why It Works
The shield acts as a physical barrier with no application or removal time and no adhesive residue. Unlike edger pads, it conforms to irregular profiles like crown molding and textured walls.
Tips
- A wide drywall taping knife (6-10 inches) works as an improvised shield.
- Wipe after every section. A dirty shield deposits paint exactly where you want to keep it clean.
- Requires two-handed coordination but gets faster with practice. Shields cost $3-8 and last indefinitely.
