Spray WD-40 for light surface rust
3
Spray WD-40 generously onto light surface rust, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub with steel wool or a Scotch-Brite pad. Wipe clean and reapply if needed. For heavier rust, WD-40 Specialist Rust Remover Soak is a dedicated chelating formula for submersion.
Why It Works
Standard WD-40 is a water-displacing penetrant that breaks the bond between light rust and metal. It loosens surface oxidation enough for scrubbing to remove it. The Specialist version uses chelating agents for deeper rust.
Tips
- Standard WD-40 only handles light surface rust — it is not a heavy-duty remover
- WD-40 Specialist Rust Remover Soak is a completely different product designed for submersion
- The temporary protective film WD-40 leaves evaporates over time — follow up with a dedicated oil for storage
- Works well as daily maintenance: a quick spray after use prevents rust from forming
