Learn to cut in by hand without tape
5
Load a quality 2-2.5 inch angled brush, tap off excess, and draw a steady line along edges where the wall meets trim, ceiling, or corners. Angle the brush so only the tips contact the edge, and pull in long, smooth strokes. This eliminates taping entirely.
Why It Works
A good angled brush with firm bristles gives you precise control at the edge. The paint flows off the angled tip in a thin, controlled line. With practice, hand-cutting is faster than taping and produces lines just as clean.
Tips
- Use a high-quality angled sash brush (Purdy, Wooster) — cheap brushes can't hold a line
- Load the brush 1/3 to 1/2 up the bristles, then tap (don't wipe) against the pail to remove drips
- Keep a wet edge — cut in one wall at a time, then roll it immediately before the cut line dries
- Practice on a closet or bathroom first to build confidence before tackling main rooms
