Brush on Naval Jelly for localized rust spots

4

Brush Naval Jelly (a thick phosphoric acid gel) directly onto rusted areas. The gel clings to vertical and overhead surfaces. Let it dwell for 5-15 minutes, then wipe away and rinse thoroughly with water. Dry and prime or oil immediately.

Why It Works

The thick gel consistency keeps the phosphoric acid in contact with rust on vertical surfaces where liquid removers would run off. It dissolves iron oxide on contact and converts remaining rust into stable iron phosphate.

Tips

  • Excels on localized spots — car body panels, fence posts, railings, gate hardware
  • Do not let it dry on the surface — dried residue is very difficult to remove
  • Safe only for iron and steel — damages aluminum, chrome, stainless steel, and painted surfaces
  • Apply a generous, thick coat — thin layers are far less effective
  • Available at most hardware stores for about $5-8 per jar
  • Wear gloves and eye protection — phosphoric acid is a skin and eye irritant
