Default to the coolest safe temperature for mixed loads

3

When washing a mixed load of different fabrics, colors, and care requirements, always set the machine to the coolest temperature recommended for any single item in the load. This protects the most delicate piece.

Why It Works

Damage from water that is too hot is irreversible — shrunken wool, faded colors, and heat-set stains cannot be undone. Damage from water that is too cold is just incomplete cleaning, which can be fixed by rewashing. Erring on the cold side carries no permanent risk.

Tips

  • Better to separate loads by temperature needs than to compromise with mixed loads
  • Cold water is almost always the safest default for a mixed load
  • If you must mix, avoid including items that specifically require hot water (heavily soiled whites, towels needing sanitization)
