Default to the coolest safe temperature for mixed loads
4
When washing a mixed load of different fabrics, colors, and care requirements, set the machine to the coolest temperature recommended for any single item in the load. This protects the most delicate piece without risk of permanent damage.
Why It Works
Damage from water that is too hot is irreversible -- shrunken wool, faded colors, and heat-set stains cannot be undone. Damage from water that is too cold is simply incomplete cleaning, which can be fixed by rewashing. Erring on the cold side carries no permanent risk.
Tips
- Separating loads by temperature needs is always better than compromising with mixed loads
- Cold water is almost always the safest default for a mixed load
- Avoid including items that specifically require hot water (heavily soiled whites, towels needing sanitization) in a mixed-temperature load
