How to wash delicate fabrics like silk and lace for a family?

Fill a clean basin with cool water (below 30°C) and add a small amount of detergent formulated for delicates or a gentle liquid like baby shampoo. Submerge the garment, gently swish for 2-3 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool water.

After gently pressing out excess water, lay knits and stretchy delicates flat on a clean towel to dry. Hang structured items like blouses on padded hangers. Never put delicates in a machine dryer.

Place delicate items inside a zippered mesh laundry bag before putting them in the washing machine. Select the delicate or gentle cycle with cold water and low spin speed.

When hand washing delicates, use a light swishing motion to move water through the fabric. Never rub, scrub, or twist the material. For spot cleaning, gently dab stains with a soft cloth rather than rubbing.

After washing, drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, cool water. Gently press the garment through the rinse water. Repeat with fresh water until no suds remain — usually 2-3 rinse cycles.

For heavily beaded gowns, antique lace, structured silk garments, or anything labeled "dry clean only," take the item to a professional dry cleaner. They use solvent-based cleaning that avoids water entirely.
