Supply Grit for Digestion
4
Offer commercial poultry grit in a separate container if your ducks do not free-range on varied terrain with natural access to small stones and pebbles.
Why It Works
Ducks lack teeth and rely on their gizzard to grind food. They swallow small stones (grit) that lodge in the gizzard and mechanically break down tough grains, seeds, and plant matter. Without grit, confined ducks cannot properly digest whole or cracked grains, leading to poor nutrient absorption.
Tips
- Use age-appropriate grit: fine grit for ducklings, coarser grit for adults.
- Place grit in a separate dish so ducks can self-regulate intake.
- Free-ranging ducks on gravel or natural ground typically find enough grit on their own.
