Provide Oyster Shell for Laying Ducks

5

Offer crushed oyster shell as a free-choice calcium supplement for ducks that are actively laying eggs. Place it in a separate container near their regular feed.

Why It Works

Eggshell formation demands large amounts of calcium. Even layer feeds with added calcium may not fully meet the needs of high-producing ducks. Crushed oyster shell dissolves slowly in the gizzard, providing a steady release of calcium that strengthens eggshells and protects the duck's own bone density over the laying season.

Tips

  • Keep oyster shell in a separate dish, not mixed into feed, so ducks self-regulate intake.
  • Non-laying ducks and drakes do not need supplemental calcium.
  • Replace the oyster shell regularly to keep it clean and dry.
