Consider dual-purpose breeds for eggs and meat
Select dual-purpose breeds that provide both respectable egg production and a worthwhile meat carcass. Silver Appleyards are widely considered the best dual-purpose duck, laying 200–270 eggs per year while reaching 8–9 lbs. Saxony ducks lay 190–240 eggs per year at 7–8 lbs. Buff Orpington ducks produce 150–220 eggs per year at 7–8 lbs with an exceptionally calm temperament.
Why It Works
Dual-purpose breeds offer the most flexibility for small-flock homesteaders who want eggs daily and the option to process surplus drakes or older birds for meat. While they won't match a Khaki Campbell's egg count or a Pekin's growth speed, they eliminate the need to maintain separate breeding lines. Their typically calm temperaments also make them easier to handle than high-strung layer breeds.
Tips
- Silver Appleyard: 200–270 eggs/year, 8–9 lbs, beautiful plumage, calm
- Saxony: 190–240 eggs/year, 7–8 lbs, good foragers, endangered breed
- Buff Orpington: 150–220 eggs/year, 7–8 lbs, very docile, good for families
- Dual-purpose drakes can be processed at 14–20 weeks for a reasonable carcass
