Consider climate hardiness when selecting breeds
Choose breeds suited to your local climate, though ducks are generally more cold-hardy than chickens. Most domestic duck breeds tolerate cold well down to single digits Fahrenheit, thanks to waterproof plumage and insulating down. Heavier breeds like Pekins and Rouens handle cold better due to greater body mass. Lighter breeds like Runners and Campbells manage heat somewhat better. Muscovies are the least cold-tolerant standard breed, as they originated in tropical South America and are prone to frostbitten caruncles.
Why It Works
Ducks' waterproof feathers and dense down layer provide excellent insulation that chickens lack. Their legs and feet have a counter-current heat exchange system that prevents heat loss through their unfeathered extremities. However, proper housing with dry bedding and wind protection matters far more than breed selection for winter survival in most climates.
Tips
- Cold-hardy breeds: Pekin, Rouen, Cayuga, Swedish, Buff Orpington
- Heat-tolerant breeds: Indian Runner, Khaki Campbell, Welsh Harlequin
- Least cold-tolerant: Muscovy (frostbite risk on caruncles below 20°F)
- Provide swimming water in summer for cooling — ducks regulate body temperature partly through their feet in water
