Evaluate temperament and noise level for your setting

4

Research breed temperament and noise levels before buying, especially in suburban or semi-urban settings. Female ducks of most breeds produce a loud, carrying quack, while drakes have a quieter, raspier voice. Muscovy ducks are the quietest domestic duck — they hiss and wag their tails instead of quacking. Welsh Harlequins and Buff Orpingtons are among the calmest standard breeds. Indian Runners and Khaki Campbells tend to be more active and flighty.

Why It Works

Noise complaints are the most common reason backyard duck keepers face neighbor disputes. A female Pekin's quack can reach 60–70 decibels and carries well beyond property lines, especially at dawn. Choosing a quieter breed or keeping only drakes (if eggs aren't the goal) dramatically reduces noise. Calmer breeds are also easier to herd, handle, and keep in smaller spaces without stress behaviors.

Tips

  • Quietest breeds: Muscovy (nearly silent), then Welsh Harlequin, Buff Orpington
  • Loudest breeds: Pekin and Call ducks (Call ducks were literally bred to quack loudly as decoys)
  • Drakes of all breeds are significantly quieter than hens
  • Individual personality varies, but breed tendencies are a reliable guide
