Apply WD-40
3
WD-40 is a penetrant and solvent, not a true lubricant. It displaces moisture and loosens rust, which can silence a squeak temporarily, but it evaporates within days and does not leave a lasting lubricating film.
Steps
- Attach the red straw nozzle for precision
- Spray a short burst directly into the gap between the hinge knuckles
- Open and close the door several times to work it in
- Wipe off any excess with a rag
Tips
- Best used as a first step to break through rust and grime before applying a true lubricant like silicone spray or white lithium grease
- The squeak will likely return within a few days to a week if WD-40 is used alone
- Protect the floor and door finish -- overspray can stain painted surfaces and make floors slippery
