Lubricate the Tracks
4
Apply a silicone-based spray lubricant or dry graphite powder to the window tracks, channels, and sash edges to reduce friction and help the window glide smoothly. Silicone spray is the preferred choice because it lasts longer and does not attract dust or dirt the way oil-based products do.
Why It Works
Window tracks accumulate microscopic grit and oxidation that increase friction over time. A silicone lubricant creates a slippery, non-sticky film that reduces drag without collecting new debris. WD-40 and similar petroleum-based sprays evaporate quickly and leave a residue that attracts dust, making the problem worse long-term.
Tips
- Clean the tracks thoroughly before applying lubricant so the coating bonds to the surface, not to dirt
- Spray silicone onto a cloth first, then wipe it along the track to avoid overspray on glass
- Reapply every 6-12 months or whenever the window begins to resist again
- Graphite powder works well for wood-on-wood sash windows where liquid sprays could swell the wood
