Use a Dehumidifier
Run a dehumidifier in the basement to maintain humidity between 30-50%, the range recommended to prevent mold growth. Dehumidifiers pull moisture from the air and collect it in a reservoir or drain it continuously through a hose, creating conditions where mold cannot actively grow or spread.
Choosing the Right Size
Dehumidifier capacity is rated in pints per day. A 30-pint unit handles a damp 500-square-foot space, while a 50-70 pint unit is better for larger or very wet basements. Look for an Energy Star rated model to keep electricity costs manageable. Units with a built-in pump and continuous drain hose eliminate the need to manually empty the reservoir.
Tips
Place the dehumidifier centrally and away from walls for best airflow. Set the target humidity to 45-50% to balance comfort and energy use. Clean the filter monthly and the reservoir weekly to prevent bacterial growth inside the unit. A dehumidifier alone will not solve the problem if there is an active water leak or major seepage; fix the moisture source first.
