Clean Mold with Appropriate Solutions
Remove visible mold from hard, non-porous basement surfaces using a cleaning solution suited to the material. For non-porous surfaces like concrete, tile, and metal, a bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon water) kills surface mold effectively. For porous materials like drywall, wood studs, and carpet, bleach only kills surface mold and cannot penetrate to reach embedded roots -- these materials often need to be cut out and replaced.
Safety Precautions
Wear an N95 respirator mask, rubber gloves, and safety goggles. Ventilate the area with fans and open windows. Never mix bleach with ammonia or ammonia-based cleaners, as this produces toxic chloramine gas that can cause serious lung damage or death. Keep children and pets out of the area during and after cleaning.
Alternatives to Bleach
Distilled white vinegar (undiluted) kills about 82% of mold species and is safer for porous surfaces than bleach. Hydrogen peroxide (3%) is another effective option. Commercial mold removers like Concrobium or RMR-86 are formulated to penetrate and kill mold without harsh fumes.
When Not to DIY
Do not attempt DIY mold cleaning if the affected area exceeds 10 square feet (EPA guideline), if you suspect black mold (Stachybotrys -- dark greenish-black, slimy texture), or if mold is inside HVAC ducts or wall cavities. These situations require professional mold remediation.
