Use Baking Soda or Activated Charcoal

2

Place open containers of baking soda or activated charcoal throughout the basement to passively absorb musty odors from the air. These natural absorbents work without electricity or chemicals and are safe around children and pets. They are best used as a supplementary measure after the mold and moisture source have been addressed.

How to Use

For baking soda, pour it into shallow bowls or open boxes and place them in corners, near known damp areas, and on shelving. Replace every 30 days. For activated charcoal, use charcoal briquettes (without lighter fluid) or activated charcoal bags and distribute them around the space. Activated charcoal is more effective per volume than baking soda and lasts 1-2 months before needing replacement or recharging in sunlight.

Limitations

These absorbents only mask or reduce existing odors. They do not kill mold, remove moisture, or prevent mold growth. If the musty smell persists or returns quickly, it indicates an active mold or moisture problem that needs direct treatment.
