Baking Soda and Vinegar Solution

Pouring baking soda followed by vinegar down the drain creates a fizzing reaction that can help loosen light soap scum and organic residue. This method is best suited for routine maintenance or very minor slowdowns. It is not effective against serious clogs caused by compacted hair, which is the most common cause of slow shower drains.

How to Do It

• Remove the drain cover and pull out any visible hair first
• Pour one-half cup of baking soda directly into the drain
• Follow with one-half cup of white vinegar and immediately cover the drain with a wet cloth to direct the fizzing action downward
• Wait 30 minutes
• Flush with a full kettle of boiling water (use very hot tap water instead if you have PVC pipes, as boiling water can soften PVC joints)

Limitations

• The fizzing reaction is visually impressive but generates only modest cleaning power; it cannot dissolve a hair clog
• Works best as a monthly maintenance flush to keep pipes clear of soap scum buildup
• If the drain is already slow, physically removing the hair clog first and then using this method as a follow-up rinse is far more effective
• Not a substitute for a drain snake or manual hair removal on a genuinely clogged drain
