Commercial Drain Cleaner

2

Chemical drain cleaners such as Drano or Liquid-Plumr use caustic or oxidizing chemicals to dissolve hair and organic matter. They can work on moderate clogs but come with significant drawbacks that make them a last resort rather than a go-to solution. Repeated use can damage PVC pipes, corrode older metal plumbing, and harm septic systems.

How to Use

  • Remove standing water from the shower floor first if possible
  • Pour the amount specified on the product label directly into the drain
  • Wait the recommended time (usually 15-30 minutes; never longer than directed)
  • Flush thoroughly with cold water for at least one minute

Risks and Limitations

  • Pipe damage: Caustic drain cleaners generate heat as they react, which can soften and warp PVC pipes with repeated use and weaken pipe joints
  • Septic systems: Chemical drain cleaners kill the beneficial bacteria that septic tanks rely on to break down waste
  • Safety hazard: These products cause chemical burns on skin contact and produce toxic fumes; never mix with other cleaning products
  • Incomplete results: Chemical cleaners often only bore a narrow hole through a hair clog rather than fully clearing it, so the drain slows again within weeks
  • Physical removal of the hair clog (by hand or with a drain snake) is more effective and causes no pipe damage
