Use a Plunger

4

A cup plunger can dislodge shallow shower drain clogs using hydraulic pressure. This works best when hair or debris is loosely blocking the drain and has not yet formed a dense, compacted plug further down the pipe. It is a good second step after manually removing visible hair from the drain opening.

How to Do It

  • Use a standard flat-bottomed cup plunger, not a flange plunger (which is designed for toilets)
  • Remove the drain cover and clear any visible hair first
  • Add enough water to the shower floor to submerge the plunger cup completely
  • Place the plunger squarely over the drain to form a tight seal
  • Plunge vigorously with quick up-and-down strokes 15-20 times, then pull the plunger away sharply
  • Repeat 2-3 times if drainage improves but is still slow

Tips

  • Apply petroleum jelly around the rim of the plunger cup for a better seal on textured shower floors
  • If your shower has an overflow drain, block it with a wet rag to maintain suction
  • Plunging is ineffective against deep clogs or heavily compacted hair; use a drain snake instead
  • Run hot water for a minute after plunging successfully to flush loosened debris
