Clean Gutters Manually
5
Climb a stable ladder and remove debris from gutters by hand or with a small scoop. This is the most thorough cleaning method and lets you inspect gutter condition up close.
Steps
- Set up a sturdy extension ladder on level ground. Have a helper stabilize it if possible.
- Wear heavy work gloves to protect against sharp debris and metal edges.
- Scoop out debris starting near a downspout, working away from it. Drop material into a bucket hung from the ladder or onto a tarp below.
- Check downspouts for blockages by running water through them after clearing the troughs.
- Rinse the gutters with a hose to flush remaining dirt toward the downspouts.
Tips
- Never lean a ladder against the gutter itself -- it can bend or detach
- Move the ladder frequently rather than overreaching to either side
- Wear safety glasses to protect against debris falling into your eyes
