Install Gutter Guards
4
Gutter guards are covers or screens that sit over the gutter trough to block leaves and debris while allowing water through. They significantly reduce cleaning frequency, though no guard eliminates maintenance entirely.
Why It Works
Guards physically prevent large debris from entering the trough. Mesh screens and micro-mesh guards block leaves while passing water. Reverse-curve (surface tension) guards use water adhesion to direct flow into the gutter while debris slides off the edge. Each type reduces buildup but still requires occasional inspection.
Tips
- Micro-mesh guards ($1.50-$4 per linear foot, DIY install) offer the best balance of cost and performance for most homes
- Reverse-curve guards handle heavy rain well but can let small debris like pine needles and shingle grit through
- No gutter guard is maintenance-free -- plan to inspect and brush off the top surface at least once a year
- Avoid cheap foam inserts; they trap moisture, degrade quickly, and can promote mold growth inside the gutter
