Flush Gutters with Water
4
After removing bulk debris, use a garden hose to flush remaining dirt and small particles through the downspouts. This confirms the entire gutter system drains freely and reveals any hidden clogs or leaking joints.
Steps
- Remove large debris first by hand or with a scoop -- flushing alone will not clear heavy buildup.
- Start at the end farthest from the downspout and work toward it, pushing sediment along the trough.
- Use a high-pressure nozzle for better cleaning force. A standard spray setting is usually insufficient.
- Watch the downspout outflow. If water backs up or trickles instead of flowing freely, the downspout is clogged -- disconnect the lower section and clear it.
Tips
- Flushing is a finishing step, not a standalone cleaning method for full clogs
- Check gutter seams and end caps for leaks while water is running
- Do this on a dry day so you can clearly see whether water is draining correctly
