Tighten Loose Screws

4

Inspect all screws on hinges, latches, strike plates, and sash locks, and tighten any that have worked loose. Loose hardware allows the sash or casement to shift out of alignment with the frame, causing it to bind at certain points when opening or closing.

Why It Works

Window hardware holds the moving parts in precise alignment with the frame. When screws loosen over time from vibration and repeated use, the sash can sag or twist slightly, creating uneven contact that causes sticking. Restoring firm fastening brings the window back into its designed alignment.

Tips

  • If a screw hole is stripped, insert a wooden toothpick or matchstick coated in wood glue, let it dry, then re-drive the screw for a solid grip
  • Use a manual screwdriver rather than a power driver to avoid overtightening and stripping the holes
  • Check both the hinge side and the latch side, as looseness on either can cause misalignment
  • After tightening, open and close the window several times to verify smooth operation
